Finding the Right Partner in Design 

Symbi Homes, a sustainable home builder, looked to revolutionize single-family home design and construction, with an emphasis on wellness, energy-efficiency and technology.

Key features of these homes include air and water filtration, biophilic designs, a highly insulated prefabricated shell, certified Net Zero Ready and ongoing home performance monitoring.

When the company worked on their pilot program for duplex homes located in the Washington, DC metro area, Dr. Nicole Tysvaer, CEO of Symbi Homes, wanted to create stylish, eco-friendly kitchens. 

“Our design was far from simple. We wanted a sleek, modern look of symmetry and clean lines. The professionals at Kitchen Design Pros found the perfect flat panel cabinet from sustainably harvested wood products,” she said.

This is where Kitchen Design Pros came in with Lead Designer Shelly Rogers creating the project. With over 20 years of experience, she has worked with a variety of single family home and duplex designs.

Design Process

To gain a better understanding of what design features Symbi Homes were looking for in their duplex project, Rogers and Tysvaer met for a quick video call.

This session provided the perfect starting point for Kitchen Design Pros to begin building kitchen designs which would be functional, stylish and use environmentally friendly materials.

Since Kitchen Design Pros is part of the Environmental Stewardship Program, all of the wood for the cabinets is sustainably harvested.

After creating initial designs of what Symbi Homes looked for in the space, Rogers and Tysvaer met to review and finalize the layouts of the space. As part of this session, the Kitchen Design Pros team includes virtual renderings of the space.

"The renderings help people see what their space will actually look like and gives them a more concrete idea of what the finished product will be. They're the aha moment clients are looking for to help the designs click in their mind," she said.

Once Tysvaer and her team reviewed the designs and had a few adjustments, Shelly created the revisions and the cabinet samples were ready to be ordered. 

Installation Process

 For the design of the kitchens, Symbi Homes decided on an L-shape design with a large island in the center. For the cabinets, contrasting colors were decided on for the space. The bottom cabinets were 440 - Orton in the Marina Color, while the top cabinets were 440 - Orton in the Natural Color. 

Once there was final approval with the samples, the cabinets were ready to be ordered. After a few weeks, the semi-custom cabinets were delivered on site and ready to be installed. Since the pieces came pre-assembled, the team was able to adjust the cabinets quickly within the space.

Installation was a simple process and the teams at both Kitchen Design Pros and Symbi Homes were delighted with how quickly the space came together. 

The finished product

The Symbi Team was ecstatic with the results of the kitchens and the attentive quality of service the Kitchen Design Pros team was able to provide. Rogers was able to incorporate the custom features they wanted to the space including extra tall cabinets, concealed exhaust hood, exposed shelving, concealed trash cans.
